Every May, the Administration for Community Living leads our nationโ€™s observance of Older Americans Month. The theme for 2021 is "Communities of Strength."

Older adults have built resilience and strength over their lives through successes, failures, joys, and difficulties. Their stories and contributions help to support and inspire others. This OAM, we will celebrate the strength of older adults and the Aging Network, with special emphasis on the power of connection and engagement in building strong communities.

There are many things we all can do to nurture ourselves, reinforce our strength, and continue to thrive. Connecting with others is one of the most importantโ€”it plays a vital role in our health and well-being, and in that of our communities. From finding joy in small things and sharing our stories, to looking at the big picture and giving to others, join us in promoting the ways we are connected and strong.

We have received a limited supply of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine and have opened up the ability to make appointments for those ages 18 and older. The Moderna vaccine is not approved for administration to those under age 18. 16 and 17-year-olds CAN NOT receive the Moderna vaccine.

Please visit www.ValleyHealth.com/Vaccine to first review eligibility, then make your appointment if you qualify. These appointments are for dose one of the two-dose Moderna vaccine. Appointments will be administered at Kurth Cottage at The Valley Hospital, located at 233 North Van Dien Avenue in Ridgewood.

We acknowledge that these appointments will go quickly, as the supply we have on hand at this time is limited. We hope to receive additional vaccine in the future and will open additional appointments commensurate with the supply at that time.

We ask for your patience as we distribute this limited supply to as many qualified individuals as quantity allows.

Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco and the Board of Commissioners have announced that the County has partnered with EZ RIDE to provide seniors age 60 and over with rides for COVID-19 vaccinations.

Rides will be provided through companies such as Lyft and Uber under a program known as Ryde4Life, which is part of the EZ Ride network. The program will be coordinated through the Bergen County Division of Community Transportation and the Division of Senior Services that will work together to approve applications submitted by residents for service.

To schedule a ride seniors can call the Bergen County Division of Community Transportation at 201-368-5955. It's National Consumer Protection Week and today is SLAM THE SCAM DAY. Last year, the Social Security Administration received over 718,000 reports of Social Security-related telephone scamsโ€”with a total of $44.8 million reported lost. Victims who lost money reported an average loss of $5,800.

The Social Security Administration urges Americans to be very cautious of calls from a government agency telling you about a problem you donโ€™t recognize. Real government officials will NEVER:

โ–ช๏ธ Threaten arrest or legal action against you if you donโ€™t immediately send money.
โ–ช๏ธ Promise to increase your benefits or resolve identity theft if you pay a fee or move your money into a protected account.
โ–ช๏ธ Require payment with retail gift card, wire transfer, internet currency, or by mailing
โ–ช๏ธ Text or email you messages that contain your personal information.

If you ever owe money to Social Security, the agency will mail you a letter with payment options and appeal rights. Social Security doesnโ€™t suspend Social Security numbers or demand secrecy from you to resolve a problemโ€”ever.

In anticipation of significant increases in demand, Valley has remodeled and reengineered our location at 599 Valley Health Plaza in Paramus (adjacent to our Luckow Pavilion). Now our primary Vaccination Center, this large, full-scale operation has already vaccinated many eligible community members and is poised to vaccinate 1,000 individuals per day when supply is consistently received by Valley at those levels.

Until then, we will continue to create appointments and administer vaccine as it is received. Availability of appointments is posted on this web page and on our Facebook and Instagram accounts. Those are the most immediate ways to stay up-to-date.
Appointment availability has been a source of frustration throughout the state and the country. We ask that you continue to be patient. We also ask that you understand that Valley, as an institution, has the infrastructure in place, in terms of facilities and personnel, to administer vaccine at a much greater level when that time comes.

In the meantime, continue to check the resource above to learn when appointments will be available. Appointments are necessary and we cannot accommodate walk-ins. As always, Valley remains committed to serving the healthcare needs of the community. Watch our video and learn more about our Center.

Age-Friendly NJ

Age Friendly Ridgewood is proud and thankful to be one of the eight community projects studied in this report, which we hope will serve as a guide to new communities interested in joining New Jersey's expanding #agefriendly movement. ... See more

Beginning in 2016, eight communities across northern New Jersey received philanthropic grants to launch age-friendly community initiatives (AFCIs). What do these initiatives look like four years into their development? This report conducted by Rutgers University School of Social Work, with funding from The Henry & Marilyn Taub Foundation, provides an overview of the people, groups, organizations, and resources that support the initiativesโ€™ work towards making their communities better places for long lives. These findings can help guide policy and practice to support the age-friendly movement as it takes hold and expands in New Jersey and beyond.

Since the COVID-19 vaccineโ€™s arrival at Valley nearly a month ago, thousands of our employees, doctors, and first responders have been vaccinated to ensure they can continue to care our community. In his video presentation, Dr. Robert Brenner, President of Clinical Integration and Physician Enterprise, presents a review of the vaccination program in the state and notes that while Valley is equally dedicated to vaccinating the community at large, we are limited by the available supply of vaccine.

We are hoping to expand our efforts and will keep you posted. Please bookmark the following web page and check it often for updates on vaccine availability: www.valleyhealth.com/vaccine.

E-NOTICE - UPDATE: RIDGEWOOD HEALTH DEPARTMENT COVID19 VACCINE CLINIC
Update: Ridgewood Health Department Covid19 Vaccine Clinic

February 7, 2021

On December 10, 2020 the Village of Ridgewood Health Department was certified by the State of NJ to operate a Covid19 Vaccine Clinic. The authorization was a result of months of planning, filing of required paperwork, and ensuring appropriate staffing. Ridgewood was able to achieve approval because the Village maintains a local health department.

Although the availability of vaccines has been largely unpredictable, the Ridgewood Health Department was able to conduct one Covid19 Vaccine Clinic in December, followed by several in January. Placing direct vaccine orders with the State of NJ, the clinic vaccinated ONLY those individuals meeting the requirements set forth by the NJ Governor/State government. On January 19, as the Ridgewood Health Department was planning to advertise to eligible members of the public, the State of NJ abruptly changed course and determined vaccines would be allocated exclusively to counties rather than using a direct local order approach. Unfortunately, this decision has resulted in significant uncertainly as to the number of vaccines, if any, Ridgewood would receive. Local clinics have been notified by Bergen County of their decision to retain all allocated doses from the State and that they (Bergen County) will not provide any vaccines to local clinics. Additionally, Bergen County stated this will be the practice for the foreseeable future.

The Village believes delivering vaccines to both the county and local clinics is the best, most efficient, way to vaccinate. This is especially true for the elderly, special needs, and those with pre-existing medical conditions who may find it challenging to travel to vaccine mega-sites. Many residents continue to reach out requesting information about scheduling a vaccine appointment locally, at the Ridgewood Covid19 Vaccine Clinic. We cannot guarantee the delivery of vaccines and, therefore, we are urging our residents to seek appointments elsewhere, until a more predictable system of vaccine delivery to the Ridgewood clinic is established.

Bergen County vaccine appointment registration visit: https://www.newbridgehealth.org/covid-19-vaccine-information/

State of New Jersey vaccine appointment registration visit: https://covid19.nj.gov/pages/vaccine CLICK on โ€œpre-register for the vaccineโ€ and complete the steps. This will allow you to view clinics in your area once you are eligible.

Support at the State Health Department please call 855-568-0545

The Village of Ridgewood will continue to make every effort to secure vaccines to ensure the at-risk members of our local community are appropriately served. Please contact both State and County officials and urge their support in providing a consistent allocation of vaccines to the State-approved Ridgewood Covid19 Vaccine Clinic and other local clinics. We are grateful for the continued support of our Village community.

Bergen Countyโ€™s Age Friendly Community Leaders meet with newly elected Bergen County Commissioner Ramon Hache yesterday to discuss the challenges identified in the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccines for older adults. The Age Friendly Leaders pledged to work in partnership with the County to improve access, register older adults, schedule appointments, and ultimately see that Bergen Countyโ€™s older adults receive the vaccine as quickly as possible. We advocated for a system of local distribution using the current infrastructure of senior centers, local health departments, and senior housing as ideal vaccination sites. As always Commissioner Hache was receptive to concerns about the concerns of older adults. ... See more

Ridgewood Police Department
Winter Storm Advisory
12/15/2020

A major winter storm is expected to hit New Jersey starting Wednesday December 16, 2020 with snowfall expected up to 18โ€ in our region. Forecasts also expect strong winds (up to 60mph) along with freezing rain through Thursday AM. The combination of high winds and a large accumulation of snow may produce localized power outages, downed wires, downed trees and may cause issues with the snow removal process.
First and foremost, the Ridgewood Police Department wants to ensure that our community is safe, and prepares for this weather event by ensuring our residents prepare themselves and their families for the upcoming days.
Please:
โ€ข Ensure you have fresh batteries for your flashlights, or that the battery is charged.
โ€ข Ensure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors have working batteries and are in proper working order (contact the Ridgewood Fire Department with any questions or concerns).
โ€ข Ensure you have fuel for snow blowers, and that snow blowers are easily accessible. It may be a good idea to check any equipment that has yet to be used this season, to ensure you can start it.
โ€ข If you do not have a snow blower, make sure that you have shovels and ice melt ready and readily accessible.
โ€ข Please keep your elderly or other neighbors who may struggle with snow removal in mind. Perhaps help them contact family members who can help. Assist them in coming up with a plan for the next few days and either provide or find them the help they may need.
โ€ข DO NOT bring outside patio heaters, fire-pits or other heat sources that are designed for use OUTDOORS, inside as a source of heat. This is very dangerous. Please only use properly functioning heaters that are designed for use indoors.
Secondly, we ask for our communityโ€™s cooperation prior to, during, and after the storm.
โ€ข Do not park any vehicles on the street. Overnight parking is prohibited. Furthermore, a refusal or inability to remove any vehicles from the street may interfere with the snow removal process, which is a violation of Village Ordinance.
โ€ข Residents who reside in the CBD are reminded that all surface lots are assumed posted as โ€œNo Parkingโ€ areas for the purposes of snow removal. Those with the Overnight Parking Permit are permitted to park on the second level of the Hudson Street Garage. Any vehicle found in a lot (with or without a permit) is subject to removal may receive a summons. Village Ordinance โ€“ 265-36(B)(5)
โ€ข Please avoid driving on the roadways until they are properly cleared of snow, and safe to travel on.

We are here to help, so please do not hesitate to contact our department if there is any way we can help you and your families stay safe.
